Whooping Cough Outbreak Hits Community

There has been an outbreak of whooping cough declared in Temiskaming region by the local health unit.

5 cases have recently popped up at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Kirkland Lake, and 13 cases in Temiskaming Shores.

Erin Cowan is the manager of infectious diseases with the health unit.

It’s something we have never dealt with before, so we are certainly taking it very seriously. We have elevated it from a community outbreak, to now, a district wide outbreak”.

She says it is very contagious, especially if people are exposed in a small contained area.
