High water levels on Lake Timiskaming have prompted a warning from the government.

Public Service and Procurement Canada says recent rain mixed with the snow melt on the Ottawa River watershed have made local waterways unsafe.

It’s expected the north end of Lake Timiskaming will continue to rise by about 20cm a day over the next week.

Residents, especially those in low-lying areas, are urged to stay away from shorelines and nearby rivers and creeks.

Shorelines and riverbanks are slippery, and the cold open water poses a serious hazard.

The local fire department is also encouraging residents to have an emergency plan in place, just in case.
