After a weekend of hard bargaining the 55,000 CUPE members reached a tentative agreement with the Ford government.
They had planned to walk off the job at midnight had they not come to terms.
That would have meant no custodians, clerical staff, or education assistants in the schools.
Many boards like the Northeastern Catholic District School Board had planned to close, while others like the District School Board Ontario North East had a plan to open.
The deal still has to be ratified but the buses were rolling this morning and schools were open.
The next round of bargaining will be with the teachers.
