Protecting Northern Animals

A newly formed group is looking out for animals in northern Ontario.

The Northern Animal Welfare Unit, run by the Timmins and District Humane Society, is now enforcing animal cruelty laws in Temiskaming-Cochrane, North Bay, Sault Ste Marie, Sudbury, and Timmins.

Earlier this year, the OSPCA stopped enforcing provincial and federal cruelty-related legislation, but some former SPCA affiliates, like the Timmins Humane Society, have stepped up to fill the void.

Each NAWU Inspector has been granted the powers of a peace officer for the purpose of enforcing animal welfare-related legislation. A number of Animal Welfare Inspectors have also been appointed to enforce animal cruelty laws in southern Ontario.

Anyone looking to report potential abuse or cruelty can now call 1-833-9-ANIMAL (1-833-926-4625.)
